Back in March of 2009, I decided a venture into India was a "must" before I entered into the official job market. Little did I know this three day jaunt to Mumbai, India would completely obliterate the idea of working for someone else!
Mumbai is known as "The Gateway to India" because it is the heart of India's vast commercial business center. The nickname references the massive monument (see top middle pic) built to commemorate King George V's entrance in to India, and how it was through this same monument that the last troops symbolizing British rule left India.
With all its cultural meanings aside, for me, personally, this city was the gateway to the start of my own business.
I went to Mumbai with my mother and sister. We fell in love with the vibrant sari colors, the spicy Indian dal, and the fact that cows and cars were often seen side by side. Not to mention, everything is cheap! We loaded up on leather sandals, faux gold bangles, kurtas, caftans, and fabric.
Yet I wouldn't have found myself going back again and again to India if it wasn't for a chance encounter with a jeweler and his family in a small jewelry shop.
